Pottery is one of the oldest crafts there is. Amphorae, hand-coiled bowls, wheel-thrown vessels — people have been shaping clay by hand for thousands of years. So what happens when that material meets a digital printer?
That's what 3D printed clay is: clay, extruded through a printer instead of shaped by hand, still fired in a kiln the same way it always has been. At The Loom Lab, we use this process to make cups, vases, and vessels with forms that would be difficult or impossible to throw on a wheel.
What Is 3D Printed Clay?
3D printed clay is real clay, extruded through a nozzle layer by layer to build up a three-dimensional object. Here's how that actually happens:

Digital design. Every piece starts as a 3D model, designed in CAD software. This is where we control the shape, the texture, and the movement of the print path.

Clay extrusion. The printer pushes real clay through a nozzle in continuous coils, similar to piping icing, but guided by the digital file rather than a hand.

Drying and firing. Once printed, each piece dries slowly to avoid cracking, then goes into the kiln just like any other ceramic. Some pieces are glazed; others are left raw so the texture stays visible.

Why Use 3D Printing for Ceramics?
Shapes you can't throw by hand
A wheel limits you to forms that can rotate symmetrically as you shape them. A printer doesn't have that constraint — spiraling walls, floating lines, thin curves that hold their shape after firing all become possible.
Less waste
The printer uses close to the amount of clay the design actually needs. No trimming scraps, no molds to discard.
Texture that comes from the process itself
The layer lines aren't a flaw to hide. They're what the process naturally produces, and we design around them rather than against them.
Room to adjust and iterate
Because the design lives in a file, we can change a shape, adjust a height, or run a small batch with slight variations without remaking a mold.

Is It Still Handmade?
We think so. Every piece from The Loom Lab starts with code, but nothing about it finishes there — loading the clay, adjusting the print, drying, trimming, glazing, and firing are all done by hand.
The printer takes the place of the potter's wheel. It doesn't take the place of the potter.
We like to describe our pieces as hand-finished, digitally born.
What This Changes, and What It Doesn't
People sometimes ask whether printing removes the human part of ceramics. In our experience, it just moves where that human part shows up. The clay still needs to be mixed by feel. It still shrinks and cracks if it dries wrong. Someone still checks every piece before it's fired and again before it ships.
